Fugro IOVTEC and TORI sign an MOU to increase the competitiveness of local crew members through crew training

Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI) of the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs) and Fugro IOVTEC Co., Ltd. (Fugro IOVTEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) today (2/22), in order to promote the development of domestic marine research and offshore wind. Both parties will jointly invest in relevant personnel training to increase the abilities and competitiveness of local crew to carry out marine research and offshore wind projects.

Marine research is a demonstration of national strength and the basis for providing important information on the current state of the local marine environment and the development of national marine resources. Under the long-term support for basic and applied research on marine science from Ministry of Science and Technology, TORI steps into the field of leading vessels research, supports national ocean-related interdisciplinary research, and plays a leading role in protecting Taiwan’s oceans.

Fugro IOVTEC is a joint venture established in Taiwan between Fugro, a Dutch multinational public company, and International Ocean Group (IOG). It has the capacity to provide various services such as hydrographic survey, geotechnical and geophysical survey, hydrographic survey and investigation, personnel transportation and other services. In addition, in order to operate a large fleet, Fugro IOVTEC has abundant human resources in the form of crew members, and often engages with national universities and institutions that provide sailing skills training, in order to set up special training courses.

In the future, TORI will, through the cooperation with Fugro IOVTEC, invest in TORI’s survey and exploration professional capabilities and assist in the development of the domestic offshore wind industry. Both parties will also conduct the cooperation on how to improve the professional skills of local survey vessel crews and on how to conduct vessel maintenance, in the hopes of contributing to the manpower training of the marine survey vessels in Taiwan and enhance the marine research and exploration capabilities of this country.
